I like to think about Spanish-first kids as children who are being RAISED in Spanish, regardless of the method the parents are using (like OPOL for us!). Spanish-first is a mindset; a lifestyle that requires the support of BOTH parents, regardless of whether one of them doesn’t speak it or whether either is perfectly fluent.

And although these peques are still “learning” the language, they’re doing it in the most powerful way possible: through connection. They’re not just practicing it. They’re living it.

This isn’t about right or wrong. It’s about clarity. Because the way our kids experience the language matters. It shapes how they feel about it, how natural it becomes, and how likely they are to carry it forward.
